Term  Dates

Community Cafe

Liz Paisley and Stephanie Redhead and students in Extended Education and Seniors 2 have opened a Commmunity Cafe. It operates once a month and is run at Applecroft School in their community room. Students from Stanborough School come to help when they can and this makes it a real Handside Schools' Partnership project.

Hertfordshire action on Disabilty provide a minibus that collects elderly people from the local community and brings them to the Cafe. The Lakeside choir has entertained our customers, they have learned how to make hanging baskets and at the last cafe they were able to make jewellery. This was  a real hit - customers bought beads etc to make more at home and asked if the bus could come later as they were having such a good time.

New Woodland!

In half term we had the woodland area revamped. We had all the old scrubby bushes removed. Thye were unattractive and getting spiky and dangerou. They have been replaced by artificial grass which has provided a large, soft play area for pupils. We hope this will add significantly to activities that chidren can undertake at play times.

Pets

This term sees the arrival of the our Lakeside pets. The first to arive were our two guinea pigs - Seniors 2 came with me to buy these pets and they will be the main carers for them. They are under cover in the playhouse for the next few weeks and then they will live outside Sen 2 classroom. Next week will see the arrival of two baby rabbits to live outside Seniors 1. Amber wrote me a lovely letter asking if they could hav erabbits. An aviary of birds in our woodland area will be next - to add colour and bird song to the area.

The chance to care for our pets will add an extra diemsion to the opportunities we can offer the pupils. They can be a very calming influence - especially for our pupils with autism.

Guinea Pigs

Meet Cheryl and Doris - don't blame me - Seniors 2 picked the names!!! They are both very fast movers - Cheryl is frenetic!!! But once caught they are happy to be held.

Rabbits

Meet Sandy and Hutch ( No they are not named after Starsky and Hutch - its because they live in a hutch!). Hutch is the darker one. Sandy is the sandy one - but she was named before we had even  seen her! They are very docile and love being handled.

Extended Schools Consortium

Extended schools provide access to a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of children, families and the wider community.

Schools are not expected to deliver these services and activities on their own but to work with other schools and with external partners and providers - for example, the health service, the local college, private and voluntary organisations.

Groups of schools can work together in groups - called Consortiums -  to deliver services and activities on various school sites. The following link will take you to the Welwyn Garden City Consortium site.
